Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to present a comprehensive “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump during a crucial visit to Washington this week. The plan, outlined by Zelensky, includes bolstering military support for Ukraine, enhancing diplomatic efforts to pressure Russia, and holding Moscow accountable for its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Following a meeting with Biden, Zelensky stated he would also present his proposal to Congress and the two leading US presidential candidates. The visit coincides with discussions around a new $375 million military aid package from the White House, a move likely to shape the course of the ongoing war.
Zelensky has expressed urgency in his call for additional Western support, particularly regarding the use of long-range missiles. Ukraine has repeatedly requested these weapons to target key Russian military assets, though Biden has yet to approve their use. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that long-range missile strikes would be seen as direct NATO involvement in the conflict.
Trump, who has previously expressed skepticism about US aid to Ukraine, continues to criticize the support provided, calling it a “waste of money” and claiming he could end the war “within 24 hours” if elected. Despite his praise of Putin in the past, Trump has stated he would “probably” meet Zelensky during the Ukrainian leader’s US visit.
Zelensky’s trip to the US is not only crucial for securing more military aid but also an opportunity to push diplomatic efforts. After meeting with Biden, he will attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he is expected to address the Security Council on Tuesday and deliver a speech to world leaders on Wednesday.
As Ukraine’s largest donor, the US has committed $56 billion to its defense, and Zelensky acknowledged the pivotal role of his nation’s allies, particularly the US. “This fall will determine the future of this war,” he remarked, underscoring the critical nature of the upcoming discussions.
With the conflict showing no signs of resolution, Zelensky’s victory plan will be closely scrutinized as Ukraine seeks to secure lasting international support in its fight against Russian aggression.
