Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s automotive firm, Ineos, has recalled more than 7,000 Grenadier SUVs in the US due to a door latch defect that could cause doors to open while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that the issue stems from exterior door buttons that may not return to position due to insufficient grease, preventing proper latching. This poses a safety risk by increasing the chance of doors flying open while the vehicle is in motion.Ineos Automotive has pledged to replace all faulty door button assemblies at no cost to owners. The recall applies to Grenadier SUVs manufactured between 6 July 2023 and 19 April 2024.This setback follows previous challenges for the company, including a temporary production halt in 2023 after a key supplier’s insolvency.Launched in 2022, the Grenadier was inspired by the classic Land Rover Defender. Despite Ineos’ initial plans to manufacture the vehicle in the UK, Ratcliffe opted to assemble it in France. Today, approximately 20,000 Grenadiers are on roads across 50 countries.Ineos Automotive reported €1.4 billion (£1.1bn, $1.5bn) in pre-tax losses for 2023, highlighting the financial pressures the company faces.Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s wealthiest individuals, owns 27.7% of Manchester United, having completed his stake acquisition earlier this year.
