“Everything is Finished”: Ukrainian Troops Relive Kursk Retreat

The retreat of Ukrainian forces from Russia’s Kursk region has been described by soldiers as a “horror movie,” with relentless Russian drone attacks, destroyed equipment, and chaotic withdrawals. In exclusive accounts shared with the BBC, Ukrainian troops painted a grim picture of the battlefield, where columns of vehicles were obliterated and escape routes became death traps.

A Frontline in Collapse

For many Ukrainian soldiers, the battle for Kursk turned into a desperate struggle for survival. “Volodymyr,” a soldier stationed in Sudzha, reported widespread panic as Ukrainian forces tried to withdraw under constant Russian drone surveillance. The main supply route, once a lifeline, became a deadly corridor controlled by enemy fire. “It was impossible to leave during the day,” he said.

By March 11, Russian forces had intensified their assault. “Maksym” detailed how Ukraine’s retreat was hampered by drone warfare, including fiber-optic-linked variants immune to electronic countermeasures. The wreckage of destroyed vehicles created bottlenecks, making movement even more perilous.

A Catastrophic Withdrawal

The situation rapidly deteriorated. “Anton,” stationed at headquarters, described the retreat as “catastrophic,” with supply lines cut and logistics in disarray. He and his comrades escaped on foot at night, dodging drones that patrolled the skies relentlessly. “Dmytro” echoed this, recounting how soldiers were forced to walk 15 to 20 kilometers to safety.

Despite the chaos, some soldiers, like “Artem,” maintained that Ukraine’s forces “fought like lions.” While acknowledging the losses, he insisted the campaign had forced Russia to divert troops from other critical fronts.

What’s Next for Ukraine?

Ukraine’s military leadership claims the retreat was strategic, but battlefield realities suggest otherwise. With two-thirds of the initially gained territory now lost, hopes of leveraging Kursk for future negotiations have faded. President Zelensky insists the operation served its purpose, but on the ground, soldiers tell a different story—one of immense sacrifice, dwindling resources, and a war that continues with no clear end in sight.
