Astronauts Butch and Suni Return to Earth After Unexpected Nine-Month Mission

After an extended nine-month mission in space, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have finally returned to Earth. Their journey ended with a dramatic but smooth splashdown off the coast of Florida, as their SpaceX capsule safely re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere. The descent, marked by a fiery streak across the sky, concluded with four parachutes slowing their landing before they gently touched the ocean.

Adding to the spectacle, a pod of dolphins encircled the capsule as recovery teams rushed to retrieve the astronauts. Once hoisted onto the recovery ship, Butch and Suni emerged from the hatch, smiling and waving, alongside fellow crew members astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

“The crew’s doing great,” assured Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, during a press briefing. NASA’s Joel Montalbano praised the astronauts’ resilience, calling their return “a beautiful landing” and thanking SpaceX for their role in bringing the mission to a successful close.

Originally intended to last just eight days, Butch and Suni’s mission was unexpectedly prolonged due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. The capsule, which transported them to the International Space Station (ISS) in June 2024, was deemed unsafe for their return. Instead, NASA arranged for their journey back on a SpaceX capsule that arrived at the ISS months later, requiring the astronauts to remain aboard until its scheduled return.

After 17 hours in transit, Butch and Suni were helped onto stretchers, a standard procedure after prolonged exposure to microgravity. Medical teams will assess their health before they reunite with their families—a long-awaited moment after missing Christmas and countless other milestones.

Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman, reflected on the significance of their return, saying, “Now, suddenly, they can perhaps catch up on a bit of lost time.”
