Dan Flanagan, partner of Ashlee Good, the mother killed while protecting her baby during a stabbing spree at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney, has spoken publicly for the first time since the tragic event. On April 13, Good, 38, was among six people fatally attacked by Joel Cauchi, who also injured her nine-month-old daughter, Harriet.
Flanagan described the day of the attack as “incomprehensible,” expressing deep sorrow and disbelief over the loss of Good, whom he remembered as a vibrant and loving osteopath. In a heartfelt message posted on a GoFundMe page that has raised nearly A$850,000, Flanagan thanked the community for its “overwhelming support, kindness, and generosity,” which has provided some solace during this difficult time.
The attack, which shocked Australia and the world, involved Cauchi stabbing 17 people before being shot by a police officer. The incident also claimed the lives of security guard Faraz Tahir, 30; Jade Young, 47; Pikria Darchia, 55; Dawn Singleton, 25; and Yixuan Cheng, believed to be in her 20s. Baby Harriet survived after undergoing surgery for her injuries.
Authorities have indicated that Cauchi’s attack was linked to mental health issues, though he appeared to specifically target women. His parents revealed he had recently stopped taking his medication. New South Wales Police have established a special strike force to investigate the attack, with findings expected to take several months.
Flanagan extended his condolences to other victims’ families and expressed hope for improved mental health services to prevent future tragedies.
