A US influencer is facing intense backlash after a video showed her taking a wild baby wombat from its distressed mother in Australia, prompting calls for her deportation.Sam Jones, who describes herself as an “outdoor enthusiast and hunter,” was filmed picking up the joey from the roadside while its mother chased after her. The man recording the video could be heard laughing as the mother wombat desperately followed. The footage, which was later deleted, sparked outrage among conservationists and officials.Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned the act, saying, “Leave the baby wombat alone. Leave it with its mum.” Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that Jones’s visa is under review, adding that she may struggle to re-enter Australia in the future. The Wombat Protection Society criticized her “appalling” behavior, highlighting the distress caused to the joey and the potential legal violations. Wildlife experts noted that removing native animals from the wild is illegal unless they require rescue due to an injured or deceased mother.Following the backlash, Jones set her Instagram account to private, but media outlets have circulated the video and other images showing her handling Australian wildlife, including an echidna and a small shark.”Wombats are not a photo prop or plaything,” said Suzanne Milthorpe of World Animal Protection Australia, stressing that Jones’s actions were both unethical and potentially illegal. An online petition demanding her deportation has already gathered over 10,500 signatures.Authorities are now investigating whether any laws were broken, while conservationists continue to emphasize the importance of protecting Australia’s native wildlife from exploitation.
