In a country undergoing a dynamic cultural transformation, one woman’s journey is standing out as a powerful symbol of strength, vision, and cinematic innovation. Amal Alhajjar, a Saudi filmmaker, producer, mother, and trailblazer, is redefining what it means to be a woman in film—not only in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but across the global stage.
At just 14, while most girls were navigating school and teenage friendships, Amal was already a wife, running a household alone, and facing the world with courage. Her husband’s demanding career in aviation left her to stand on her own feet early on. That chapter, though steeped in challenge, became the crucible in which Amal forged her resilience and independence.
“Marriage at 14 forced me to shed my childhood early,” Amal reflects. “I had to become the strong woman who could stand on her own.”
From those early days, Amal didn’t just survive—she transformed. Her work ethic, curiosity, and pursuit of purpose led her into interior design and eventually to a serendipitous discovery: screenwriting. Enrolling in a writing workshop led by the legendary Dr. Medhat El Adl, Amal’s raw storytelling talent captured attention. She quickly ascended, becoming a writing team supervisor and launching a career she never imagined.
“I never imagined I would enter the film industry,” she shares. “But storytelling captivated me, and I knew I had found my passion.”
Today, Amal is the proud producer of two successful films—Hajeer and Villa 54—and is currently working on her third feature, Hayat Al-Suqoor. What sets her apart is not only her creative lens but her strategic mind. Determined to make her stories heard, she self-funded her first film and learned the nuances of production from scratch. Mentored by the El Adl Group and seasoned professionals, Amal mastered everything from budgeting and casting to marketing and international distribution.
But for Amal, filmmaking is more than storytelling—it’s nation-building. She sees cinema as a vital pillar in Saudi Arabia’s cultural emergence and envisions a globally respected industry rooted in Saudi identity.
“I’ve gained the trust of many filmmakers, but this industry needs continuous funding,” she says. “I’m actively working on partnerships to ensure my projects and others flourish.”
Amal has emerged as a vital force for women in Saudi Arabia’s evolving cinematic landscape. While the industry remains male-dominated, she has earned her seat at the table—not through entitlement, but relentless determination.
“In the beginning, many doubted my abilities,” she says. “It was hard to be taken seriously, but I let my work speak for itself.”
Her debut film Hajeer was a bold declaration of Saudi identity, capturing nuanced cultural elements rarely shown on screen. It was not just a local success but received acclaim at international festivals such as the Dakhla Film Festival, where the audience responded with a standing ovation.
“I was keen to shed light on the sophisticated details of Saudi society so audiences could breathe in the air of its markets and the warmth of its people,” Amal says.
Amal credits part of her rise to the transformational vision of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has championed the empowerment of Saudi women.
“We, as women, have become very active players in our country,” she says. “We’ve learned from the Crown Prince’s vision. I’ve never begged for success—I fought for it.”
Beyond film, Amal sees herself as an ambassador of Saudi heritage and a champion for women’s representation in media. Her ambition is not just to succeed individually but to build a cinematic ecosystem where emerging Saudi talents can thrive.
“I want people to talk about Saudi cinema in terms of ‘before Amal Alhajjar’ and ‘after,’” she declares. “We have so many untold stories waiting to be shared.”
Her advice to aspiring creatives is grounded and practical:
“Talent alone isn’t enough. You need to sharpen your skills with education and persistence. Work in silence, focus, and never compare your path with others.”
Amal Alhajjar’s story is a beacon of courage and commitment. From a young girl facing life’s challenges alone to a filmmaker breaking international barriers, her journey exemplifies what’s possible when vision meets determination.
As Saudi Arabia takes its place on the world’s cultural stage, Amal Alhajjar stands at the forefront—not just as a storyteller, but as a movement. Through her work, the world will see a new face of Saudi Arabia—rooted in tradition, yet soaring toward global innovation.
