Trump Orders Sweeping Expansion of Migrant Deportations Amid Rising Protests

US President Donald Trump has ordered a major escalation in migrant detention and deportations, directing federal agencies to execute what he described as “the single largest mass deportation programme in history.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump instructed agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to “do all in their power” to carry out the operation, specifically targeting sanctuary cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York—epicenters of recent protests against his immigration policies.

“I’ve directed the entire administration to put every resource possible behind this effort,” Trump wrote, adding, “You have my unwavering support. Now go, get the job done!”

The directive comes amid nationwide unrest, as thousands continue to protest what they see as aggressive and discriminatory immigration enforcement. The latest wave of demonstrations, led by the “No Kings” movement on 14 June, swept across major cities and coincided with a military parade in Washington, D.C. marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary—held on Trump’s 79th birthday.

One person was fatally shot during a “No Kings” rally in Salt Lake City, Utah, further intensifying tensions.

Trump has also ordered immigration officials to concentrate efforts on so-called sanctuary cities—jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Officials in these cities have publicly defended their legal authority to shield undocumented migrants, deepening the standoff between local and federal governments.

Although polls ahead of the 2024 election showed support for stricter immigration enforcement, the implementation of mass deportations has only fueled public opposition. Despite this, Trump’s latest move signals a firm commitment to one of his most controversial campaign promises.

Ironically, the order comes just a day after Reuters reported the administration had instructed immigration agents to pause raids on farms, hotels, meatpacking plants, and restaurants—traditionally high-risk areas for undocumented laborers.

As protests grow louder, Trump’s immigration crackdown continues to polarize an already divided nation.
